Barring Orthodox leaf demand for other categories of tea increased during Sale-18

 Barring Orthodox leaf the total demand for all other categories of tea increased during Sale-18, a Calcutta Tea Traders’ Association (CTTA) official said here on Saturday.

Despite reduced offerings, the total demand increased marginally during the auction as compared to last week, the official said.

The auction (Sale-18) was held on May 3 and 4.

According to CTTA data, the total offerings amounted to 91,768 packages (25,74,299 kg) comprising 28,707 packages of CTC leaf, 50,391 packages of orthodox, 959 packages of Darjeeling leaf and 11,711 packages of dust tea.

CTC leaf met good demand and a total of 6,92,018 kg of different categories was sold at an average price of Rs 187.49 per kg.

Around 39.67 per cent of the total demand was witnessed for CTC leaf at below Rs 150 per kg level while 17.97 was marked above Rs.250 per kg.

Western India supported well while Hindustan Unilever remained selective.TCPL operated on plainer sorts and some enquiry was in evidence from exporters. Other internals registered good support.

Orthodox offerings marked fair demand at a higher price range and a total of 8,48,221 kg of different qualities were sold at an average price of Rs 223.92 per kg.

Only 11.1 per cent of the total demand was marked at below Rs 150 per kg while 25.45 per cent was witnessed at a higher price level. Middle East operated at lower levels while CIS marked good support. Local dealers and other internals also saw good support.

Darjeeling leaf met with strong demand at a higher price level and a total of 12,446 kg of different qualities were sold at an average price of Rs.856.91 per kg. About 74.04 per cent of total demand was witnessed at above Rs 500 per kg and only 4.53 per cent was in evidence at a lower price range. Exporters saw good support while TCPL and Hindustan Unilever remained quiet. Local dealers and other internals were active.

There was good demand for this week’s dust offerings and 2,87,641 kg of different quality was claimed at an average price of Rs 193.73 per kg.

Around 29.65 per cent of the total demand was marked at a lower price level and 16.8 per cent was observed at above Rs 250 per kg, the data reflected.

Western India operated well while TCPL remained quiet. Other internals registered fair support.

The number of buyers for CTC, Orthodox, Darjeeling leaf and dust tea was 120, 73, 51 and 55 respectively during this session, the official data added.
