Union Minister of Earth Sciences Kiran Rijiju said that a bathymetry survey has been conducted to ascertain the areas of shallow waters along the coast of Andhra Pradesh.
In the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, the Minister gave a written reply to a question asked by YSRCP Rajya Sabha member V Vijayasai Reddy and revealed that a bathymetric survey has been completed using state-of-the-art knowledge to find shallow areas along the coast from Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh to Odisha border. The minister explained that with the information collected through this survey, it will be possible to scientifically study the shape and nature of the seabed as well as the floods and inundation that occur on the coast.
Minister Kiran Rijiju, stated that the data obtained through this survey will be useful for constructing fishing harbors and jetties in the coastal area and identifying suitable places for safe beach landing. Bathymetry data can be linked with data used for fishing to understand the morphology of sand dunes and the effect of sediment on the coast, he said. The Minister said that this data will be very useful in understanding the shape of the seabed in shallow waters and dealing effectively with natural calamities like tsunamis, typhoons and floods.
