Bapatla district SP Vakul Jindal asked people to be cautious about the new type of cyber crimes which have been reported in the recent past.
unemployed, students, and others with insufficient pay, hunt online for part-time jobs. Since it is preferable to work part-time employment when they have free time, women who stay at home are also seeking online jobs. For the objective of finding part-time work, these people publish their information on several websites. These details are stolen by cybercriminals, who then perpetrate fraud. Due to the increase in smartphone and digital transactions, frauds are also on the rise.
This type of cybercrime has just been discovered in Vetapalem Police Station’s purview. When the victim, a software employee, responded with “part-time job” to the WhatsApp message sent to his mobile device. Then the hackers sent him a URL and instructed him to click on the item, add it to his online shopping basket, take a screenshot, and send it. The victim followed their instructions and made a deposit of Rs. 150.
He was then included in a Telegram group by online criminals. Tasks appeared when the victim clicked on the links in that group, and could exchange them for free. He took a screenshot of the money earned after finishing the chores and emailed it to the group’s receptionist, who then deposited the money in his bank account.
Cybercriminals persuaded the victim to complete tasks in exchange for modest amounts of money that were then paid into the victim’s bank account. The victim then has complete trust in them, performed duties in two to three stages, and deposited a sizable sum of money into the cybercriminals’ accounts.
On the phony website that the cybercriminals constructed, all of the victim’s earnings were shown in the victim’s name. By promising that the victim’s account will be credited with all the money after completing total tasks, the cybercriminals were ultimately able to steal roughly Rs. 10,00,000 from the victim.
Similarly, a faculty member of a college residing under Chirala 2 Town Police Station also lost about Rs.30,00,000/- to this type of cyber fraud in the past.
Modus Operandi is that a message with the title of part-time employment will be sent to the victim on WhatsApp.When the victim replies to that message, he/she will receive a URL. The victim will join a Telegram group after clicking the link. Various kinds of little tasks are given in that telegram group.
The mission is finished when the victim sends forth that screenshot. A tiny sum of money is transferred into the victim’s account after he/she completes the task, making it appear as though he/she has won. The victim believes that the money appeared without any effort or investment. Cybercriminals will incite the victim to believe that by investing a modest sum of money, they will receive a significant sum in return.
The SP asked people to verify the legitimacy of the company by checking its website, contact information, and online presence. Look for reviews and feedback from other employees or job seekers. Avoid sharing sensitive personal details, such as bank account numbers, Aadhar card, and phone numbers, or copies of identification documents, unless you are certain about the legitimacy of the job opportunity and the recipient.
