BJP aided rapists in Bilkis Bano case: Owaisi

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi on On Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of aiding convicts in the Bilkis Bano’s rape case that happened during the 2002 Godhra riots.
Quoting the Supreme Court, Owaisi said,”The State of Gujarat acted in complicity with the convicts.”  Welcoming the Supreme Court judgment, he demanded, “BJP government and PM Modi to apologise to Bilkis Bano.”
Following the Supreme Court judgement that overturned remission granted to 11 persons convicted of Bano’s rape, the Hyderabad MP criticised the Gujarat government’s welcome of them in 2022. The apex court ordered the convicts to report back to the concerned jail authorities within two weeks. The Bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan emphasised that the plea for the protection of the liberty of convicts cannot be accepted, and the “natural consequences” of setting aside remission orders must follow. The top court nullified the Gujarat government’s decision to release the convicts under the State’s remission policy on August 15, 2022.
