BJP wins two MLC seats, Congress none

Must read

The BJP’s Chinnamalai Anji Reddy won the Karimnagar-Medak-Adilabad-Nizamabad MLC Graduates constituency, maintaining his lead throughout all the rounds of priority vote counting, giving a significant blow to the ruling Congress.
Although Anji Reddy did not secure over 50 per cent of the votes (with the quota set at 1,11,672), election officials declared him the winner as he garnered the highest number of votes.
Congress candidate V. Narender Reddy initially objected to the decision, but election authorities reportedly addressed his concerns and provided clarifications.
As no candidate secured a majority in the first priority votes, officials proceeded to count the second priority votes, eliminating candidates in ascending order.
Out of the 56 contestants in the graduates’ MLC elections, 54 were eliminated. BSP candidate Prasanna Harikrishna, who consistently held the third place from the first round of priority votes, was also eliminated in the 54th stage.
With the BSP candidate’s elimination, only Anji Reddy and Narender Reddy remained in contention. After 53 candidates were eliminated, the BJP candidate led with 78,635 votes, while the Congress hopeful followed with 73,644 votes.
A total of 2,52,029 votes were cast, out of which 2,23,343 were deemed valid, while 28,686 votes were invalid. The required quota for victory was set at 1,11,672 votes.
With this win, the BJP claimed two MLC seats – one from the graduates’ constituency and another from the teachers’ constituency – while the PRTU secured the second teachers’ constituency in the elections held on February 27.
Malka Komaraiah of the BJP emerged victorious from the Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar Teachers’ constituency, whereas PRTU’s Pingili Sripal Reddy defeated incumbent MLC A. Narsi Reddy to win from the Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda Teachers’ constituency.
