With a 76% rise in breast diseases in Southern India, where one woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 4 minutes and one dies every 8 minutes, the Breast Health Express has been launched to provide medical testing and raise awareness for rural women.
The doctors of AGI Hospitals, in collaboration with the Asian Medical Foundation, UC Breast Foundation, and Hyderabad-based Granules, launched the Breast Health Express. This mobile unit is equipped with advanced mammography, ultrasound, and essential health checks like hemoglobin, blood pressure, and glucose.
During a presentation at the launch, Consultant Breast Oncologist at AIG and Founder of UC Breast Foundation, Dr Pragyna Chigurupati, highlighted the importance of early breast cancer testing, citing that 1 in 64 women in rural areas and 1 in 22 in urban areas are affected. Dr Pragyna also shared data showing the crude incidence of breast cancer in Telangana, rising from 13.5 per 100,000 women in 2016 to a projected 18.5 by 2026. She also pointed out the challenges faced in the country, such as unequal access to diagnostic and treatment care, resource shortages, delays in seeking care, and high attrition rates. Dr D Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman of AIG Hospitals, stressed that 60% of breast cancer cases are detected too late, highlighting the need for more awareness and early testing.
He emphasised the importance of educating the public to save lives and appreciated the partnership between Granules Trust, Asian Medical Foundation, UC Breast Foundation and AIG Hospitals as a strong example of private sector collaboration in tackling major healthcare challenges.
