Senior BRS MLA Harish Rao lashed out at the Centre for drastically cutting the number of work days allotted under MGNREGS for Telangana, terming the move shameful and unjust.
He also accused the TG Congress Government of remaining a mute spectator while lakhs of rural workers were being denied their rightful dues.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Harish pointed out that while 12.22 crore workdays were sanctioned for Telangana under MGNREGS in 2024-25, this year the Centre had slashed the quota to just 6.5 crore workdays.
“Despite Chief Minister Revanth Reddy making 42 trips to New Delhi, he has not been able to secure anything worthwhile for Telangana,” Harish said, adding that both the Congress and BJP MPs had failed the state.
He said that although both national parties had eight MPs each from Telangana, none of them raised their voice when injustice was being meted out to the state. “It is shocking that not a single MP from either party speaks up while Telangana suffers,” he said.
Harish blasted the Congress government for not paying wages to NREGS workers in the last four months. “The state is playing with the lives of poor labourers,” he said, accusing the government of pushing them into distress.
“Both the Centre and the state have colluded to make the employment guarantee scheme ineffective in Telangana. On behalf of the BRS, we demand that the Centre immediately increase the number of NREGS workdays and the state government pay the pending wages for four months without delay,” Harish said.
