District Collector V Prasanna Venkatesh said that the child marriage is unlawful and he warned of stringent action against who indulges in child marriages.
The Collector here on Wednesday participated in an awareness programme Child Marriages Law-2006 and he released wall posters on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that from August 16 th to September 15 th, awareness programmes were being organized in the district to eradicate child marriages.
Conducting or promoting child marriages is a crime under the law, he said and directed the officials concerned to create awareness in the field about the injustices caused by child marriages.
Parents should not force their children into child marriages and girls should not be married till the age of 18 years, he stated.
“Anyone who commits or abets child marriage will be jailed for two years and fined up to Rs 1 lakh. Besides, if a minor girl is married, the bridegroom’s parents, bride’s parents and relatives will get the punishment of 10 years to 20 years imprisonment, fine or life imprisonment as per FOXO law,” the Collector warned.
