‘Jagan landed AP in crisis’ Says debt burden soared to Rs 9.74 L cr in past 5 years
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has accused the previous YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government of exacerbating Andhra Pradesh’s financial crisis. On the fifth day of the Legislative Assembly session on Friday, Naidu released a white paper detailing financial irregularities under the YSRCP regime, revealing that the state’s debt has surged to Rs 9.74 lakh crore over the last five years.
Naidu criticised the former administration for decreasing state income while significantly increasing debt. He alleged that funds intended for various programmes were diverted and public property was mortgaged to secure loans. “If we collectively understand what transpired between 2019 and 2024, it will clarify our future course of action,” Naidu said.
The Chief Minister expressed grave concern over the prolonged delay in completing the Polavaram project and the mismanagement of funds. He suggested that the state is on the brink of bankruptcy, citing the extensive mortgaging of public property and heavy borrowing by the previous government.

Naidu noted that Telangana is advancing in sectors such as industry, agriculture, and infrastructure, partly due to its urban development, including the metro city of Hyderabad. He acknowledged that while Telangana continues to build on the foundation laid during his tenure, Andhra Pradesh needs to start afresh.
Reflecting on the achievements of the previous TDP administration, Naidu highlighted major developmental projects such as irrigation systems, airports, roads, industrial corridors, and ports. He cited successful investments from companies like Kia Motors, Hero, Asian Paints, Isuzu Motors, and Celkon as evidence of Andhra Pradesh’s appeal to investors.
Naidu lamented that Amaravati, had its development continued, could have become one of the world’s premier cities. He is optimistic that efforts will be made to restore Amaravati’s former glory, envisioning it as a new epicentre of growth. “I am confident that soon the world will discuss Amaravati, and our state will achieve top economic growth,” Naidu asserted.
Addressing the Polavaram project, Naidu mentioned that Rs 15,364 crore was spent, and claimed that under TDP leadership, the project would have been completed by 2021. He announced plans to relaunch Anna Canteens at 100 locations by August 15 and to introduce free sand supply. Naidu stressed the need for effective implementation of these initiatives and fulfilment of remaining promises as part of the Super Six programme.
He urged that the Centre release necessary funds and emphasized the importance of hard work. Naidu highlighted that despite financial constraints, innovative ideas and experience could drive development. He praised Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan’s commitment to progress and expressed hope for future advancements.
Naidu aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Vikasitha Bharat by 2047 and the NDA Government’s vision 2047 for the state. He advocated for creative administration and wealth creation, citing the planning of 16-lane roads as an example. “Our goal should be zero poverty and eliminating economic imbalances,” Naidu concluded.
