District Collector A Shyam Prasad has reaffirmed the district administration’s commitment to fostering the economic growth of fish farmers through various initiatives. Speaking at a training programme for the Fish Farmer Producer Organisation (FFPO) under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) held on Thursday, the Collector highlighted the critical role of fish farming in the district’s economy.
“Currently, our fish wealth generates only Rs. 194 crore annually, and it is vital that we boost this figure,” said Shyam Prasad. “Approximately 96,000 people are directly or indirectly dependent
on fish farming, and it is our responsibility to provide them with the tools and knowledge
to improve their livelihoods.”
The Collector emphasised the need to enhance the number and strength of fish producer associations. “We currently have five fish producer associations, each with 100 members. We must expand these associations to help more farmers join the collective effort and increase fish production,” he added. Shyam Prasad also directed the Fisheries Department to expedite the distribution of fingerlings to farmers, ensuring it is done by November each year. He urged the fishermen to make the most of government schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, which is expected to be completed by March 31, 2025.
The Central Government will release Rs. 2.5 lakh in the first installment, with an additional Rs. 2.5 lakh available in the second installment if the funds are used effectively.
“This means fish farmers can access up to Rs 5 lakh for their development if they properly utilise the funds,” he noted. The Collector also proposed a scheme where if members contribute Rs. 2,000 as equity, they will receive Rs. 4,000 from the government within 15 days. “This initiative will help fishermen access more resources for their operations,” he explained.
Shyam Prasad urged all fish farmers to take full advantage of the various government schemes to enhance their economic development. “Our goal is to set a target for high fish production and ensure that every fisherman is well-equipped to thrive,” he concluded.
