District Collector P Prashanthi appealed to all to plant saplings to protect the environment.
A programme was held here on Friday to plant saplings in which the Collector, Joint Collector S Ram Sundar Reddy and his wife C Prasanna participated. The programme was held on the occasion of World Nature Conservation Day.
They planted saplings on the occasion. As many as 400 saplings were planted on the Peda Amiram road on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Collector Prashanthi said that under the slogan of ‘Green Earth…Green Andhra Pradesh’, a large-scale plantation programme was undertaken in the district under the auspices of the IAS Officers’ Wives Association.
The Collector said that 50,000 saplings are being planted in the district by DWAMA, Industries, NGOs and Educational Institutions to transform the district into a “Green West Godavari”.
“If we give life to a plant, it will be useful for us for a lifetime. Everyone should realize that everything we consume comes from plants. We are planting saplings as a movement to control pollution,” Collector Prashanthi said.
She explained that saplings are being planted in all government offices, educational institutions and government places to protect the environment, adding that plants are of great benefit to mankind. This program has been undertaken on a large scale to make West Godavari district green, she stated.
The Collector called upon people to plant saplings and also take the responsibility of nurturing them. She expressed concern over growing air pollution due to the increase of vehicles and to protect mankind planting of saplings and nurture them are imperative, she observed. She recalled that July 28 is observed as a World Nature Conservation day. DCMS Chairman PVL Narasimha Raju, DWMA PD STV Rajeswara Rao, DRDA PD MSS Venugopal and other officials were present.
Meanwhile, Joint Collector Ram Sundar Reddy and his wife Prasanna planted saplings at Gollavanitippa village.
