To help traffic police cope with the intense summer heat, the Visakhapatnam City Police have introduced air-conditioned (AC) helmets at key junctions across the city.

A total of 30 AC helmets with Active Cooling Technology have been procured from Karam Safety Pvt Ltd, Noida, at a cost of Rs 6 lakh. Funded by philanthropic donors, the helmets are made from strong polypropylene copolymer and are designed to reduce body temperature by 8°C to 10°C.

City Police Commissioner Dr Shanka Brata Bagchi told The Pioneer, “This is a proactive step to ensure the well-being of our frontline staff. These helmets are not just for comfort — they help protect our officers from the harsh conditions they face every day.” Each helmet weighs around 740 grams and offers up to eight hours of cooling after a four-hour charge. The in-built battery system, a key feature, comes with a 10-year warranty.

“This move shows our effort to use technology to improve our team’s working conditions. It’s encouraging to see community members supporting this cause,” Dr Bagchi added.

Earlier, the Commissionerate had provided 220 cool jackets to traffic staff. After positive feedback, 40 more jackets are being sourced from Gurgaon and will be handed over soon.

Dr Bagchi further said the goal is to create a safer, more humane work environment. “Our traffic personnel play a crucial role in keeping civic life running smoothly. We have to support them.”
