Court orders registration of case against police officer

Additional District Judge took cognizance of a petition filed by a girl that the Inspector of police failed to redress her grievance

Additional District Judge Lal Singh Srinvias on Wednesday ordered the registration of a criminal case within 15 days against an Inspector of Police for failing to extend required support to a minor in a child sexual abuse case. The judge also directed the government to take departmental action against the police officer. The judge said that the police officer was negligent in not performing duty in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence (POCSO) Act.

An accused, Syed Abdul Halim, was arrested under POCSO Act for sexually harassing a girl. He was later granted conditional bail. After coming out of bail, he allegedly subjected the girl and her family members to harassment.

The girl, unable to bear the harassment, the girl approached the police. The Inspector of Police allegedly acted negligently. The family approached the court on July 19 seeking justice and protection.

The judge ensured that the girl’s statement was recorded. After examining the case, the judge ordered the registration of a criminal case against the Inspector of Police and departmental action against him. The judge directed the court to send the orders to higher police officers.
