Dr Bantu Prasanta Kumar Patro, Chief Scientist at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad, has been bestowed upon the National Geoscience Award 2023 in the category of Geophysics/Applied Geophysics by President of India Droupadi Murmu, in recognition of his remarkable contributions in the field of Geoscience.
Dr Patro has been lauded for his groundbreaking work in unravelling the 3D electrical sub-surface structure beneath critical geological segments of the Indian shield. His research has provided significant insights into the subsurface complexities of India’s geological landscape, advancing the understanding of the country’s natural resources and tectonic framework. One of his most notable contributions is in resolving the long-standing mystery of the subtrappean lithology of the Deccan Traps.
Using advanced geophysical techniques, he successfully mapped the underlying geological structures. His contributions have not only deepened our knowledge of the Earth’s subsurface but also have important implications for mineral exploration, natural hazard assessment and groundwater management.
