Curating B-town wardrobes

Must read

Creating a niche for herself in the fashion world with her creativity is Amandeep Kaur. The celeb go-to stylist for the Kaushal brothers at the moment, speaks of her journey, working with the biggies, and more.
Amandeep Kaur has managed to carve a niche for herself in the fashion world with her acute perspective on aesthetics. She is a firm believer in analysing the unique personalities of the stars before deep-diving into curating their wardrobes. Currently, she is the go-to stylist for the Kaushal Brothers – Vicky and Sunny Kaushal. She has previously also styled other celebrities like Sonam Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu, Alia Bhatt, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Radhika Madan. In a candid conversation, the talented stylist talks about her big break into Bollywood styling, her dream about styling for a big Hindi feature film, and all the challenges that make this ride both a boon and a bane.
“It didn’t happen to me overnight. I styled a variety of celebrities while I worked as a stylist for publications, including A-list actors, TV actors, small-time stars, and novices. I ended up dressing Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt, and Sonam Kapoor. The experience of dealing with performers of different temperaments and styles was enhanced by each shot,” she shared. Her association with Vicky has been cordial and lengthy. She now considers him and his family to be her family. His whole faith in her is incredibly helpful, and it for sure makes her job simpler. They create styles that aim to strike a balance between the two characters. As you may have seen, his promotional attire for Sardar Udham was earthy chic, while that for Uri: The Surgical Strike was army-inspired and gruff.
When asked if she had also styled Taapsee, Yami Gautam, and Radhika Madan, and if they also collaborated on their looks, she explained, “I sometimes feel like a ‘fashion psychologist’ since, as a stylist, I strive to closely examine each person’s personality. When styling someone, I prefer to check through their Instagram profiles and interviews to get a sense of who they are psychologically by deciphering their appearance. Regarding which body parts do they feel secure and which do they not? How do they dress? Which silhouettes appeal to them? What sort of nonverbal cues do they use? In my research, all of this comes together.” Taapsee has consistently demonstrated a great deal of faith in her. They have collaborated on numerous photo shoots where they didn’t even try on the clothes beforehand. But for some shots, she makes it quite apparent when there’s a certain silhouette she doesn’t like. “In contrast, Radhika is quite clear about what she wants. To help me better understand what she wants in the bigger picture, she would look up references and convey the styles that speak to her. However, she has also shown a great deal of trust when it comes to actuals, and fortunately, her most recent appearances have been quite beneficial to both of us. We ended up having a terrific time together because we shot in and around my birthplace of Delhi, where I styled Yami for one of my films. I dressed her with accessories and textiles that were distinctly Delhi-inspired. Undoubtedly, there were preliminary briefings and comments. Overall though, I recognized a lot of myself in that persona,” she added.
How was it collaborating with the renowned fashion innovator Sonam Kapoor? The stylist answered, “To be honest, I was a little anxious. She goes through the clothing quickly because she knows it all by heart. Her familiarity with the majority of Indian and foreign designers’ collections is apparent, and her passion for fashion is reflected in the images we were able to capture. She is the personification of the outfit’s personality. She would exhibit a ballerina’s elegance and feminine body language when modeling a long, sheer dress, and an explosive male energy when wearing a pantsuit. Sonam Kapoor’s individuality is what makes her look distinct with every change of clothes. She truly seems to have been made to appreciate fashion from birth.”
Then, she became genuinely enthralled with Zoya Akhtar’s perception and comprehension of urban fashion. She thinks Priyanka Chopra and Anushka Sharma have some of the greatest fashion senses seen in Bollywood to date in Dil Dhadakne Do. In fact, the stylist observed how the entire cast of the movie wore the most exotic nautical clothes, which were expertly tailored to fit each character in a unique way. In Made in Heaven, Shobhita’s character wore exquisite clothing that was distinctive and didn’t mimic Western or Hollywood styles, but rather an extremely hip Indian-urban look.
