Dalit youth hung upside down, tortured on suspicion of theft

In a shocking incident at Mandamarri Yapal in the district, a Dalit youth was hung upside down and tortured on suspicion of theft. Another Dalit youth was tied to a pole and tortured on the suspicion that he had helped his friend steal two sheep from a flock.

The incident sent shock waves across the district. Though the incident took place two days ago, it came to light on Sunday. Bellampally Assistant Commissioner of Police Sadayya said that a case under Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

According to police, Chakali Ramulu, a farmer, and his family members hung a Dalit youth, identified as Kiran, upside down from a tree and tortured him. A fire was also lit under Kiran and he was found gasping for breath. Apart from it, the farmer and his family members allegedly tied another Dalit, identified as Teja, and tortured him by tying him to a pole. Teja was accused of helping Kiran steal the sheep.

When Kiran denied having stolen the sheep, the farmer lit a fire under him and made him gasp for breath. Unable to bear the torture, the youth reportedly admitted having stolen the sheep. The farmer and his family members tortured Teja too until he confessed to having helped Kiran steal the sheep.

Some elders in the community imposed a penalty of Rs 6,000 on the youth.

The incident came to light when Kiran’s mother approached the police as her son went missing for two days. An investigation launched by the police revealed that the two youths were tortured on suspicion of theft of sheep.
