A large number of villagers in Chintala Manepally village in Kumaram Bheem Asifabad district lived in fear for days on end after consuming the milk of a milch animal which was bitten by a rabid dog 12 days ago.
According to villagers, one of the 16 buffalos in a farmer’s stable was bitten by a dog infected with rabies. The farmer kept the incident under wraps. He, however, called a veterinarian and ensured that 15 buffalos were administered anti-rabies vaccines. He left out the buffalo which was bitten by the rabid dog. On the 12th day of the rabid dog attack, the buffalo died.
When the news of the death of the buffalo due to the rabid dog attack spread, it caused panic among the people who consumed the milk of the milch animal for 12 days. The people demanded action against the farmer. The farmer reportedly sold milk and curd to hundreds of villagers.
As the situation seemed to be going out of hand, the people’s representatives swung into action. They organised a medical camp in the village to administer anti-rabies vaccine to villagers. Hundreds of villagers, including children, turned out at the medical camp to get jabs. The doctors administered vaccines free of cost to everyone.
The doctors pointed out that there was no evidence of exposure to the milk of a rabid animal causing rabies.
