Dedicated helpline launched for specially abled

Visakhapatnam police has launched a dedicated helpline service named “DISHA-DIVYANG SURAKSHA” to assist individuals with visual and hearing impairments. This programme aims to empower the disabled community and ensure their well-being.
The initiative introduces separate helpline numbers for the visually impaired (7337324466) and the hearing impaired (7337434422) to provide immediate assistance. Notably, the control room is equipped with three experts proficient in sign language for enhanced communication.
Commissioner Dr Ravi Shankar, inspired by an encounter with a deaf patient during his medical days, acknowledged the unique challenges faced by the disabled. He emphasized the prevalence of crimes against this community, including suspicious deaths, child abuse, and road accidents. The Commissioner also pledged to recognize and award police personnel for outstanding service to the disabled-on World Disability Day, demonstrating a commitment to building trust and fostering a safer environment.
YSRCP Regional Coordinator Dr YV Subbareddy appreciated the importance of such initiatives in fostering an inclusive and safe community for everyone. He commended the City Police for taking proactive steps to address the unique needs of the visually impaired and hearing-impaired citizens, ensuring their safety and well-being. He also pledged to expand the “DISHA-DIVYANG SURAKSHA” app to other parts of the state.
Visakhapatnam Mayor G Hari Venkata Kumari lauded the Disha-Divyang Suraksha helpline initiative, which reflects the City Police’s dedication to fostering inclusivity and accessibility within the community. The initiative is expected to bridge gaps in emergency response systems, ensuring that every citizen, regardless of their abilities, can access timely assistance and support when needed.
Minister Gudivada Amarnath emphasized the program’s significance in bridging the gap between the police and the deaf and dumb community. He extended his support to the Disha-Divyang Suraksha initiative, highlighting the role it plays in creating a more accessible and empathetic society. He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between the government and various stakeholders to ensure the success of such crucial endeavors. He also highlighted the success of the Disha app in building trust and encouraged further collaboration with schools and NGOs.
The program concluded with statistics on disabled victims from 2019-2023, underscoring the crucial need for such initiatives. The collaboration of various departments and individuals, including the Commissioner of Police, NGOs, DEO, students, and officials, marks a significant step towards a safer and more inclusive society for all citizens in Visakhapatnam.
