Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao expressed his indignation over the bank officials erecting a flexi banner in the fields of a farmer, belonging to Polkampeta under Lngampeta mandal in Kamareddy district, declaring him to be a “loan defaulter.”
According to reports, a farmer belonging to Polkampeta pledged his land and obtained loan from the District Cooperative Central Bank (DCCB). As the crop failed, the loan amount and the interest accrued on it became too heavy for the farmers to repay.
Therefore, the farmer could not clear the loan. Two days ago, DCCB Lingampeta branch officials planted red flags in the said land and served notices on the farmer that the bank would put up the land for auction on June 20. Also, the bank officials fixed a flexi banner in the field creating sensation in the area.
The farmers protested this and staged a demonstration in front of the DCCB.
On learning about it, Nageswara Rao, who sought information from the bank officials about the Polkampalli incident, cautioned the officials against such practices.
It is common in villages that the cooperative banks even raid the houses of farmers for defaulting on loans to scare them into repaying the loans. Farmers kept on protesting such arm-twisting methods.
