Deletion of words from textbooks condemned

The Telangana State United Teachers Federation and Teachers Progressive Federation have expressed their discontent with the State Council of Educational Research and Training, claiming that an error occurred in the Social textbooks’ first page where the words “Socialist” and “Secular” were deleted from the Preamble.

The Preamble of the Indian Constitution was modified by the 42nd amendment during the emergency period from (June 1975 to March 1977), when Indira Gandhi served as the Prime Minister.

This amendment changed the description of India from a “Sovereign Democratic Republic” to a “Sovereign, Socialist, Secular Democratic Republic.”

Placing (Pre-1977) preamble on the cover page of this year’s Class X Social textbooks is an insult to the Constitution.

Despite no changes being made to the current year’s syllabus and no alterations to the inner pages by the editorial board, the decision to change the cover page was made.

This move has led to concerns among teachers that the Central government’s attempts to remove these elements from the Constitution are being supported by those responsible for the textbook publication.

“We, the Federations, condemn the irresponsible actions of the officials involved in misrepresenting the Preamble of the Constitution of India on the first page of the textbooks. We demand appropriate action to be taken against those responsible for this oversight,” stated the Teachers’ Federations.
