The Janachaitanya Vedika has called upon the Andhra Pradesh government to change the name of YS Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR) district to YSR Kadapa district, arguing that the previous government’s decision in 2010 to rename it was historically erroneous.
Vallamreddy Lakshman Reddy, president of the Janachaitanya Vedika Andhra Pradesh committee, said that the complete removal of Kadapa’s historical and cultural name during an emotional cabinet meeting after YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s death hurt the sentiments of the Telugu people. He stated that just as Nellore district is identified as Sri Potti Sri Ramulu Nellore and Konaseema is referred to as Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema, Kadapa should also be referred to as YS Rajasekhara Reddy Kadapa district.
The Janachaitanya Vedika emphasised that historical landmarks, monuments, and project names should never be changed. They urged the government not to assign names of living individuals to new constructions or projects but instead, to commemorate the names of distinguished individuals who have served the public and sacrificed their lives in political, social, and cultural fields.
