The increase in pensions, now at Rs 3000, will directly benefit various segments of the population, including Old Age Pensioners, Widows, Single Women, Weavers, Toddy Tappers, Fishermen, Traditional Cobblers, PLHIV, and ART Pensioners. This development represents a significant stride towards providing financial security for the elderly and deserving individuals within the state. Launched on January 1, 2024, the scheme is set to benefit a total of 66 lakh pension beneficiaries in Andhra Pradesh. A sum of Rs 1968 crore will be disbursed to 66.34 lakh beneficiaries across the state between January 1 and 8. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is scheduled to partake in the week-long celebrations of the distribution of enhanced pensions” on January 3, 2024, at the Rangaraya Medical College grounds in Kakinada. Besides, 1,17,161 eligible individuals will receive new pension cards during the event. The State government is the sole entity in the country providing a monthly pension of Rs 3,000 to a maximum of 66.34 lakh people. The Village/Ward Secretariats, along with volunteers, diligently distribute pensions at the beneficiaries’ doorstep every 1st of the month, regardless of weekends or holidays, with a warm smile. The anticipated annual expenditure on the 66.34 lakh pensions, effective January 1, 2024, is estimated at Rs 23,556 crores.
The cumulative benefit extended through pensions by the Jagananna government since assuming office has now surpassed Rs 83,526 crores. A notable contrast emerges when comparing the current government’s achievements with its predecessor. While the previous administration provided pensions to 39 lakhs until six months before the elections, the Jagananna government has successfully extended this support to 66.34 lakh. Over the last 55 months, an impressive 29,51,760 new pensions have been sanctioned under the current government’s tenure.
