DMHO underlines need of eradication of leprosy

District Medical and Health Officer Dr. D Maheswara Rao underlined the need of coordinated efforts to eradicate leprosy from the society and directed the medical staff to conduct a survey efficiently to identify people with leprosy symptoms.
The DMHO held a meeting here on Friday with the medical officials and staff and reviewed the arrangements being made to conduct a survey to identify the people with leprosy symptoms in the district.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr.Maheswara Rao said that a survey would be conducted from December 27 to January 12, 2024 to identify the leprosy patients under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme.
The DMHO directed the ANMs, ASHA workers, NGOs and other medical staff to make the survey successful. He asked the ANMs and ASHA workers to go house to house in their areas and examine every individual as part of identifying people with leprosy symptoms.
He asked them to examine every individual to find out if he or she has rashes or scars on the body. If the person has a scar or symptoms, he or she should be taken to the doctor for further medical checkups, he told them.
The DMHO asked the health staff to lay focus on hostels, slumps, dumping yards, isoland villages and leprosy colonies to conduct the surveys. He said that in the first survey, conducted till November 22, 2022, 46 leprosy cases were detected and in the second survey which was conducted till June 23, 2023, 54 leprosy cases were detected. All the 100 leprosy patients were treated and the disease cured completely, he added.
The third survey to identify leprosy cases would be held for 17 days from December 27 to January 12, he said and directed all the ANMs, ASHS workers, NGOs and other medical staff to take part in the survey and identify those who have leprosy symptoms. The Central and State governments aimed at eradicating leprosy completely in the country by 2027, he informed.
Social Welfare officer K Sobharani, additional DMHO Dr.B Bhanu Naik, deputy para-medical officer KV Srinivasulu, GDV foundation Gogula Manda Rajesh Khanna, ANMs and ASHA workers were among those who attended the meeting.
