Doctor seeks Legislation to transport heart patients

Doctors have sought legislation mandating that heart patients should be transported only in ambulances equipped with trained Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).

Dr Mukharjee Madivada of Pulse Heart Centre said, “Sai Chand’s death has deeply affected Telangana. The visuals of his wife crying inconsolably are heart-wrenching.

There are two important points to be addressed here. As I have been advocating, it is essential to provide CPR training to everyone and educate them about the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). The transportation of a patient during a heart attack should be done with utmost care.”

In a tweet, he recalled an incident connected to Puneeth Rajkumar’s death. “He was diagnosed with a heart attack at one medical facility but unfortunately passed away while being transported to a major hospital. A similar situation occurred here as well,” he said.

Regarding steps to prevent such mishaps the doctor said, “The victims of heart attacks should be transported only in ambulances as performing CPR in private vehicles is very challenging. We should train Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) in CPR, defibrillator usage and intubation. Legislation should be introduced to ensure that every ambulance has qualified EMTs.”

He said that training for EMTs can be completed in 15 days. “He requested KTR to consider issuing a Government Order (GO) mandating the placement of AEDs and trained individuals at all locations where people gather. Implement another GO directing heart patients must be transported only in ambulances equipped with trained EMTs and resuscitation equipment.”
