The recent Supreme Court ruling on demolition drives in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri does not apply to HYDRAA’s operations in Hyderabad, the Commissioner of the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRAA), AV Ranganath, said.
“The Supreme Court’s verdict does not apply to HYDRAA. HYDRAA demolishes only encroachments on lakes, drains or government land and not properties belonging to criminals or accused individuals,” Ranganath said in a statement.
The Supreme Court’s interim order was passed in response to multiple pleas against demolition drives. The court ruled that no demolitions should occur without its permission although it clarified this did not apply to unauthorized buildings on public spaces like roads, footpaths or water bodies.
This ruling arose due to concerns about demolitions being used as punitive measures against individuals accused of crimes. However, HYDRAA’s operations in Hyderabad are focused solely on addressing illegal buildings, Ranganath said.
