Minister for Cinematography and Tourism Kandula Durgesh has alleged that controversies are being deliberately stirred ahead of the release of actor Pawan Kalyan’s films. He clarified that an inquiry is underway into the decision to close cinema theatres across Andhra Pradesh from June 1.
Speaking at a press conference here on Monday, the Minister said a committee led by the Home Commissioner is investigating the reasons behind the move by distributors and exhibitors to shut down theatres. He pointed out that such controversies typically arise in the lead-up to films starring Pawan Kalyan.
However, Durgesh assured that the government harbours no vindictive intent towards the film industry. “I do not insist that industry bigwigs must meet the Chief Minister or Deputy Chief Minister,” he said, clarifying his stand.
He further questioned the timing of the theatre closures, highlighting that Hari Hara Veeramallu, starring Pawan Kalyan, is scheduled for release on June 12. “We will not tolerate any attempts to destabilise the film industry,” the Minister warned.
Durgesh strongly objected to the negative campaign against Hari Hara Veeramallu, especially predictions of its failure even before release. “How can anyone pronounce judgement on a film before watching it?” he asked.
The Minister also condemned remarks by Film Chamber Secretary Damodar Prasad, who stated that the industry did not require any intervention given the current amicable atmosphere. “If that is the case, why did they approach then Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy for support?” he asked.
Defending film producer Allu Aravind’s recent comments, Durgesh asserted that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan are both committed to developing the cinema sector. He added that the government is working on introducing a new policy for the film industry in the state.
