Dysfunctional streetlight throw many parts in city into darkness

Must read

Hyderabad, one of the busiest cities, goes dark at night due to most of the streetlights, median lights, and junction lights remain dysfunctional. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has been turning a blind to the issues, which is especially dangerous during the monsoon season. This raises the concern for travelling at night as many motorists often cannot see potholes, leading to accidents. This is also a major safety concern, particularly for pedestrians and women, as it increases the risk of robbery and crime. Even the police has to struggle to find evidence in dark areas, as many of the city streets are facing defective street lights.
When asked, Vinay Vangla, an activist, pointed out that the streetlights along the Hi-Tech City road, including those in front of Google’s office, are not functioning. He said that Kondapur flyover has alternating dim lights, making it unsafe. He also added that many busy areas like Gachibowli, Nanakramguda, Lingampally, Chandanagar, Madhapur, Kukatpally, and Moosapet face similar issues with broken and faulty streetlights. Both the activists, Vinay Vangla and Harish alleged that 70 per cent of the streetlights are out of order.
Vinay urged GHMC to address the problem, emphasising that it is a minor issue but has been neglected, especially since the maintenance is outsourced. He called on the Commissioner of GHMC and other officials of the respective department to inspect the city limits of GHMC at night to understand the seriousness of the situation, particularly concerning women’s safety as the violence is increasing day by day.
Meanwhile, Rajesh Constantine, a resident of Kacheguda and an HSBC employee, also raised concerns saying that many of the kacheguda and surrounding areas also consist of notorious people.
