The Agriculture Minister, Tummala Nageshwara Rao, stated that efforts are underway to implement the ‘Crop Insurance’ scheme in the state, and steps to be taken to benefit all farmers.
On Wednesday, a preliminary meeting was held at the Secretariat with the Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, Chairman of the Farmers’ Commission M Kodanda Reddy, Secretary of Agriculture Raghunandan Rao, and other officials regarding the implementation of the ‘Crop Insurance’ scheme.
In this meeting, it was discussed that all farmers should get insurance under this scheme, and which crops should be covered by the insurance scheme. Especially during the monsoon and Yasangi seasons, a comprehensive discussion was held on the issue of which crops should be covered under which disasters.
Officials explained to the Minister that the state has been divided into 11 clusters based on the probability of damage, and that generally, about 128 lakh acres of crops are sown during the monsoon season, of which 66.78 lakh acres are paddy, 5.23 lakh acres are maize, 44.75 lakh acres are cotton, 1.90 lakh acres are chilli, 3.80 lakh acres are soybean, and 5.21 lakh acres are sorghum. During the Yasangi crop season, crops are sown in a total of 78 lakh acres, of which 59 lakh acres are paddy, 9 lakh acres are maize, 2.2 lakh acres are groundnut, and 1.7 lakh acres are gram.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister expressed the hope that crop insurance will provide some compensation to the farmers for the crop losses caused by climate change, mainly due to untimely rains, excessive rains, hailstorms, and drought conditions.
