The egg, an affordable nutritious food, is sold at an all-time high rate of Rs 7 per egg in AP. For many, chicken seems a worthwhile option than egg at this price point. The poultry farmers, who faced losses due to low prices for the past few months, are happy but the common man cut down egg consumption to half due to skyrocketing egg prices. With the increase in egg price, the farm owners are enjoying the profits.

Interestingly, the price of an egg in Rythu Bazar is Rs 5.75. However, the buyers are unhappy with the size of the egg sold there and prefer buying them at retail shops paying Rs 7 each.

Egg is very commonly used in various forms by people right from children to the elderly as it is rich in proteins. During the Covid pandemic, the consumption was very high as even doctors advised people to take a protein rich diet and eggs were the only affordable source of protein available to even common people.

On the other hand, about 30 per cent poultry farms across the State have stopped production due to various reasons. The poultry farm owners say that the poultry feed price has doubled during the past one year even the maintenance has also become a costly affair for the farm owners resulting in closure of poultry farms in the State.

National Egg Coordination Committee chairman T Kutumba Rao, spoke to The Pioneer and said that for the past one-and-a-half years, the poultry farmers across the State had been running into losses due to various reasons and about 30 per cent poultry farm owners were out of business. He said that apart from regular consumption, during the winter season the consumption of eggs increased. Christmas and New Year celebrations resulted in shortage and increase in price. After the winter season the price would be rolled back.

Kutumba Rao said that before bifurcation, the State was number 1 in egg production in the country. After bifurcation, however, AP and Tamil Nadu are competing for the first place in egg production. Earlier, the production of eggs in AP was about 5 crore that came down to 3.5 to 4 crore per day resulting in shortage.

K Adinarayana, a retailer, said that for the past one week, the price of eggs was Rs 7 and by month end the price would reduce. He said that the sale of eggs was also slightly down after the price increased.
