State handloom and weavers department Principal Secretary K Sunita underlined the need for encouraging weavers by purchasing handloom products.
The principal secretary along with Collector M Venugopal Reddy inaugurated the state handloom exhibition in the TTD Kalyana Mandapam here on Tuesday. She visited the stalls and saw the clothes. Talking to the media on the occasion, she said there are 1,27,000 handloom workers in the state who are making 33 types of handloom products.
This special handloom exhibition showcases Dharmavaram, Venkatagiri, Fanidam, Puttur, Chirala, Uppada, Bobbili cotton and silk plain zari sarees, Mangalagiri dress materials, carpets, lungis, Kongur shirts, various types of handloom textiles from the states of Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, she said.
She informed that the State Handloom Textile Exhibition would continue till December 12, adding that 61 stalls have been set up with all the handloom textile products of the state and famous handloom textiles in various states of the country.
Sunita said that 95 percent of the world’s handloom textile products are made in the country and the state ranks sixth in the production of handloom textiles in the country.
District Collector M Venugopal Reddy said that the government is organizing textile exhibitions to increase the popularity of hand-woven textiles. MLC Dokka Manykyavara Prasad, MLC Murugudu Hanumantha Rao, and others were present.
