ENC’s INS Dega set for expansion with the commissioning of Bhogapuram Airport

The Eastern Naval Command’s (ENC) air station, INS Dega, is poised for a major expansion following the commissioning of the Bhogapuram International Airport in Vizianagaram district. Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of ENC, disclosed this during a media interaction held as part of the Navy Day celebrations.
Currently, INS Dega shares its facilities with civilian aircraft. However, once the Bhogapuram Airport becomes operational, the air station will be exclusively dedicated to military operations. “The space freed up will enable us to enhance our infrastructure and accommodate more aircraft,” Vice Admiral Pendharkar stated. He also confirmed the induction of Rafale fighter jets at INS Dega, adding to the existing assets along the eastern seaboard, including carrier-borne fighter jets.
Regarding long-term plans, the Vice Admiral noted, “The decision on a third aircraft carrier is pending and currently in the initial approval stages.” He highlighted the Navy’s efforts to integrate emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and drones, to strengthen operational capabilities. “We have begun incorporating these technologies into office processes and maritime domain awareness to build a comprehensive operational picture,” he explained.
Vice Admiral Pendharkar emphasised the strategic role of drones in modern warfare. “We have already inducted various drones, including surveillance drones and quadcopters, for monitoring ships. The Navy is closely tracking global technological advancements to integrate them into its capabilities,” he said.
On the induction of aircraft carrier INS Vikrant into ENC, he provided updates on the ongoing naval outer harbour project, assuring that the carrier would be stationed in Visakhapatnam upon project completion.
Additionally, the Navy is developing advanced underwater autonomous systems and enhancing surface vessel capabilities to bolster maritime security.
