Healthy, vibrant hair starts at the root—literally. While styling plays a role, the foundation of great hair lies in scalp care, proper maintenance, and using the right tools. Research shows that factors like heat exposure, mechanical stress and even daily habits can impact hair strength and overall health. By adopting the right techniques and making mindful choices, one can protect and nourish your hair from the inside out. With a focus on healthy hair habits, Rob Smith, In-house principal scientist and his team shares five tips to help protect and nourish your hair while minimizing heat damage.
Start with the scalp
“From our research into the science of hair, we know that there’s a connection between the quality of hair and a healthy scalp. The scalp tissue comprises different layers, with the outermost layer serving as a barrier against external stressors. But when the scalp is damaged, moisture loss can occur” says Shawn Lim, Head of Research at Dyson.
Don’t Skip Washing or Drying
A clean scalp is the foundation of healthy hair. Regular washing removes environmental pollutants and excess sebum that can feed harmful bacteria. However, water causes hair to swell in diameter by 14 to 16% and temporarily breaks some of the hydrogen bonds that hold the structure together, weakening it by up to 42% when wet and making it more prone to damage, like breakage.
Reduce Mechanical Damage
Friction and mechanical stress weaken hair over time. Use gentle brushes, silk pillowcases, and tools.
Using the right products as per hair type and needs
Choosing the right products as per the hair type and specific needs is essential for maintaining healthy, beautiful hair. Using products that don’t align with the hair type or overusing them can often do more harm than good. One should look for products that lock in styles flexibly, working strand by strand with a lightweight bond structure. This approach ensures each strand can move naturally, maintain its shape, and feel soft and conditioned—without any stiffness or crunch.
Take a holistic approach to hair health
A comprehensive approach to hair health goes beyond products – it’s about nurturing the whole body. Start by getting adequate sunlight exposure for vitamin D production, which supports hair growth. Combine this with stress management through regular exercise and mindfulness practices to prevent excessive shedding. Most importantly, fuelling the body with a nutrient-rich diet full of vitamins, minerals, and proteins to maintain strong, vibrant hair from the inside out. Hair health reflects overall wellness, so maintaining this balance is key.
