Experiencing the first period after pregnancy can be an emotional and physical rollercoaster. It signifies the return of your menstrual cycle and the potential for future pregnancies, but it can also bring with it some uncomfortable symptoms and potential complications. This can be a challenging time, especially for new mothers who may not know what to expect or how to manage their menstrual cycle safely and comfortably.
Dr. Pooja Choudhary (MBBS, MD), (Senior Consultant-Obstetrics and Gynaecology), Apollo Cradle & Children’s Hospital, Nehru Place, New Delhi, shares some essential dos and don’ts that can help you navigate your first-period after pregnancy with confidence and ease.
Dos:
.Be prepared for heavy bleeding: Your first period after pregnancy may be heavier than normal, and you may experience more cramping and discomfort. Make sure you have plenty of sanitary products on hand, including pads and tampons, and be prepared to change them frequently. If you experience extremely heavy bleeding or pass large blood clots, contact your doctor.
.Take care of your emotional health: The hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can take a toll on your emotional health. If you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious, don’t hesitate to seek help. Talk to your partner, friends, or family members, or consider seeing a therapist.
.Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help prevent constipation, which is quite common after pregnancy. It can also help keep you hydrated and reduce the risk of bladder infections and other urinary tract problems.
.Get enough sleep: Adequate sleep is crucial for your physical and emotional health. Try to get at least seven hours of sleep each night, and take naps when you can. If you are having trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor.
Don’ts:
.Don’t use tampoons too soon: Your doctor may advise you to wait until after your first postpartum checkup before using tampons. This is because using tampons too soon after childbirth can increase the risk of infection and delay the healing process. Stick to pads until your doctor gives you the go-ahead to use tampons.
.Don’t have sex too soon: It’s important to give your body time to heal after childbirth before engaging in sexual activity. Your doctor will advise you on when it’s safe to resume sexual activity, but it’s generally recommended to wait at least six weeks after vaginal delivery and longer after a C-section. Having sex too soon can increase the risk of infection and cause discomfort.
.Don’t neglect your pelvic floor muscles: Pregnancy and childbirth can weaken your pelvic floor muscles, which can lead to incontinence and other problems. To strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, try doing Kegel exercises regularly. These exercises involve contracting and relaxing your pelvic muscles and can be done anywhere, anytime.
.Don’t ignore abnormal symptoms: If you experience any abnormal symptoms during your first period after delivery, such as fever, severe pain, or excessive bleeding, contact your doctor immediately. These symptoms could be a sign of an infection or other complication that needs prompt medical attention
.Don’t skip your postpartum checkup: Your doctor will want to see you for a postpartum checkup within six weeks of giving birth. This is an important opportunity to discuss any concerns you have about your health, including your menstrual cycle. Your doctor can also check for any signs of complications and advise you on birth control options.
The first period after pregnancy can be both exciting and challenging. By following these dos and don’ts, you can manage your menstrual cycle safely and comfortably, while also taking care of your overall health and well-being. Remember to be patient with yourself and give your body the time it needs to heal and adjust.
If you have any concerns or questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance and support. With the right care and preparation, you can navigate the first period after pregnancy with confidence and ease.
