Former CBI director Vijayaramarao dead

Former CBI Director Vijayaramarao (85) who later became a TDP minister in the United Andhra Pradesh state died here on Monday.

Vijayaramarao’s family admitted him to Jubilee Hills Apollo Hospital on Monday after he suffered a cerebral stroke. Apollo Hospital doctors declared that Vijayaramarao died at 7 pm while undergoing treatment.

Vijayaramarao, who belonged to the united Andhra Pradesh cadre, was CBI director when the late PV Narasimha Rao was Prime Minister during 1991-96. He was Hyderabad Police Commissioner during the 1984 political crisis.

In 1999, Vijayaramarao entered politics by joining the TDP and became an MLA defeating the late P. Janardhan Reddy (PJR) in Khairathabad constituency. He became a Minister later.

Vijayaramarao was defeated by PJR in the 2004 elections and in the 2009 elections by Danam Nagender. Vijayaramarao quit the TDP after the division of United Andhra Pradesh.

Vijayaramarao was born in Eturu Nagaram in the erstwhile Warangal district. He went to a school in Venkatagiri in Nellore district. Later, he completed BA from Madras University. Vijayaramarao worked as a lecturer at the SRR College in Karimnagar in 1958.

Later, he joined IPS and was first appointed as the ASP of Chittoor after his training in 1959 and in many other districts.

As CBI director, Vijayaramarao probed the Hawala scam, the demolition of the Babri structure, the ISRO spying case and the Mumbai bomb blasts.

Vijayaramarao passed LLB while serving as an IPS officer. After retirement, Vijayaramarao wrote the book ‘Police Manual.’
