Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister
Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister K. Pawan Kalyan lamented that a funds crunch has crippled the Panchayat Raj system in the State.
Pawan Kalyan held a meeting with Collector Shan Mohan Sagili and other officials on Tuesday to review various issues.
Speaking on the occasion, he said the government earns over Rs 1000 crore from sand extraction in East Godavari district, but it has not given the Panchayat Raj its share.
“The village panchayats are facing a funds crunch because the state government has diverted their funds to other purposes. The panchayats should receive their share from sand extraction, mines, registrations, and labour taxes, but the government has not allocated the due funds. I was shocked at the dismal financial situation of the village panchayats when officials explained,” Pawan Kalyan asserted.
Due to the indifference of the erstwhile YSRCP government, Andhra Pradesh did not receive funds under the Jal Jeevan Mission, and the matching funds were not released.
Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, drinking water could be supplied to every village, he stated.
The Panchayat Raj Minister assured the development of Hope Island as an Eco-Tourism Park. Without harming marine life, eco-tourism would be developed at Hope Island, he announced.
Pawan Kalyan deplored the destruction of the Mada forest to provide house sites. Moreover, the harmful Malaysian breed of Kono Carpus saplings was planted for greenery, and they would be removed in a phased manner, he stated.
The Minister recalled being kept informed for a long time about the disappearance of over 30,000 women and girls in the state. Following a complaint from a Bhimavaram couple, he directed the Vijayawada CP to trace their missing daughter. The police traced the girl in Jammu within 72 hours and are bringing her to Vijayawada, he disclosed.
Pawan Kalyan proposed setting up a special cell for missing girls and informed that he would discuss the matter in the next Cabinet meeting. MP Tangella Uday Srinivas, MLAs Vanamadi Venkateswara Rao, Pantam Nanaji, V. Satyaprabha, Jyothula Nehru, and SP Satish Kumar were among those who attended the meeting.
