Thermo Fisher Scientific signs MoU to set up a Bioprocess Design Centre
Highlighting that a Bioprocess Design Centre (BDC) will be established in Hyderabad’s Genome Valley, Minister for IT and Industries D Sridhar Babu announced that Fortune 500 company Thermo Fisher Scientific, headquartered in Boston, USA, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Telangana government at the Minister’s office in the State Secretariat on Wednesday.
Sridhar Babu shared that the design centre, spread across 10,000 square feet, is expected to be fully operational in the first quarter of 2025. The Minister emphasized that this facility will benefit the local pharma and life sciences sectors, improving their capabilities. He was pleased that a globally renowned company like Thermo Fisher chose Telangana as its base. With 1,800 biopharma companies in the State, Telangana has become a major hub for pharmaceutical production and research.
The upcoming Bioprocess Design Centre will have state-of-the-art labs and advanced research facilities. Sridhar Babu said Telangana contributes 33% of India’s pharma and life sciences exports. The State’s Skill University will also help provide the industry with skilled manpower. Dr Reddy’s Laboratories is currently training 80 individuals to address the skill gap.
The Minister added that the third phase of Genome Valley’s expansion is progressing rapidly, attracting more pharma and life sciences companies, and a conference on AI in Pharma is scheduled for November 18.
Sridhar Babu also highlighted Thermo Fisher’s critical role during COVID-19, producing test kits and supplying chemicals for Pfizer and Moderna’s vaccines.
The MoU signing was attended by Thermo Fisher Scientific representatives Fred Lowery, Daniella Crump, Tony Acciarito, Srinath Venkatesh, Sarita Rawat, along with TGIIC CEO Madhusudan and Telangana Life Sciences CEO Shakti Nagappan.
