A goods train derailed led to a massive crash on Wednesday. The train, carrying iron and steel materials from Bellary in Karnataka to Ghaziabad, derailed between Peddapalli and Raghavapur railway stations. Eleven overturned. As a result, three railway tracks, including the upper, lower, and third lines, were completely damaged. The goods train wagons were destroyed and scattered all over the area.
This accident caused a complete disruption of train services between New Delhi and Chennai and between Secunderabad and New Delhi. In total, 50 trains were cancelled, including several superfast express trains. Around 55 super-fast express and passenger trains were rerouted from Secunderabad via Nizamabad, and some others through Kazipet, Karimnagar, and Nizamabad towards Nagpur and Delhi. Additionally, eight trains were partially cancelled.
The goods train derailment incident has caused a complete halt to train services at the affected locations. Since Wednesday morning, train operations have been suspended, leading to severe difficulties for a large number of train passengers across areas including Secunderabad Division, Kazipet Junction, Vijayawada Division, Chennai area, Nagpur, and New Delhi, who are struggling to board trains.
In response to the goods train accident, the Railway Department became alert and launched restoration work on a war footing. Senior railway officials rushed to the site of the incident. Hundreds of railway personnel, along with heavy machinery, are working to rebuild the damaged tracks. Efforts are underway to clear the wreckage and speed up restoration work. The General Manager of South Central Railway, Arun Kumar, is personally overseeing the restoration efforts.
Reports suggest that the accident may have been caused due to overloading or excessive speed. This incident appeared to have resulted in a huge financial loss for Indian Railways. Similar accidents involving goods trains happened in this region in the past.
The Central Railway is conducting a thorough investigation into the possible causes behind the goods train derailment. Sources said that the officials are investigating multiple factors, such as whether the incident occurred due to overloading, overspeeding, or any technical fault.
The cancelled trains include major services such as the Nagpur-Secunderabad Express, along with trains scheduled to depart from Hyderabad and Secunderabad towards destinations like Sirpur Kagaznagar, Karimnagar, Bhadrachalam, Kacheguda to Nagersol, Secunderabad-Rameswaram, Secunderabad-Tirupati, Raichur, Nanded, and others.
Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar has sought information on the incident from South Central Railway officials.
