The Telangana Government has formally extended the Marriage Incentive Award scheme to disabled couples if both individuals have disabilities. Until now, the scheme was only applicable to marriages between a person with disability and a non-disabled partner.
As per the latest GO Ms. No. 7 issued on Monday (May 19) by the Department for Women, Children, Disabled and Senior Citizens, a cash incentive of Rs 1 lakh will now be given for marriages between two disabled persons. The amount will be credited in the name of the wife to aid family support and promote financial empowerment.
The government had hiked the incentive in 2018 from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000 for mixed-ability marriages. The latest order, issued after a recommendation by the Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Senior Citizens and Transgender Persons, extends the benefit to disabled couples as well.
The scheme aims to promote inclusivity and ensure equality in state welfare programmes. The Director of the concerned department has been directed to implement the revised order with immediate effect.
