Chief Minister Revanth Reddy will face his first political test in January 2024 before the Lok Sabha elections.
The term of 12,751 Gram Panchayats will be coming to an end by January 30, 2024. As per schedule, the elections to these Gram Panchayats should be held before January 30, 2024.
The State Election Commission is preparing to conduct elections for these Gram Panchayats. The elections to Gram Panchayats are held on a non-party basis. But political parties have made Gram Panchayat elections indirectly on a party basis.
In 2019, Gram Panchayat elections were held in January. In that election, out of 12,751 Gram Panchayats, the ruling BRS won 7,774 Gram Panchayats, the Congress 2,709 and the BJP 163 Gram Panchayats.
Usually, the ruling party will have the advantage in winning panchayats. Even though political parties try to conduct these elections on a political basis the people of Gram Panchayats think about getting more money from the State government for the development of their panchayats. Due to this, the people of Gram Panchayats will try to elect a Sarpanch who belongs to the ruling party.
Winning a majority of Gram Panchayats will help political parties in the Lok Sabha elections as they will have a strong base at the village level.
In the Gram Panchayat election also the main fight will be between the Congress and the BRS. The BRS has a strong cadre network at the village level. The BRS will try to win more panchayats to become strong at the village level which will help them in the Lok Sabha elections.
In the recent Assembly elections, the difference between the Congress and the BRS was less than 2% votes. So both the Congress and the BRS will try to elect their party men or sympathisers in Gram Panchayats.
After the Gram Panchayat elections, polls will be held for ZPTCs and MPTCs. In Telangana, there are 538 ZPTCs (Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies) and 5,817 MPTCs (Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies).
In 2019 May, elections were held for ZPTCs and MPTCs. In that, the BRS won 446 ZPTCs and 3,556 MPTCs. The Congress won 75 ZPTCs and 1,377 MPTCs. The BJP won eight ZPTCs and 211 MPTCs.
The elections to ZPTCs and MPTCs are held on a party basis. Winning more ZPTCs and MPTCs will help political parties capture MPP President and ZPP Chairperson posts. Winning of more ZPTCs and MPTCs also helps political parties in local body MLC elections.
As per schedule, the elections to ZPTC and MPTCs should be held before May 2024. But there are chances of the Lok Sabha elections being held around April 2024. So the State Election Commission may hold the elections for ZPTCs and MPTCs after the Lok Sabha polls.
The State Election Commission may also hold these elections along with Gram Panchayat elections keeping in view the Lok Sabha elections.
