‘Hardware technology accelerating AI, software amplifying it’

Must read

Cyient Founder BVR Mohan Reddy here on Saturday said that hardware technology is accelerating AI and software is amplifying it. He was speaking about leadership in the AI era at the Hyderabad Management Association (HMA) Leadership Conclave 2025. He said that while AI will impact repetitive jobs in the short term, it will create huge employment opportunities from 2026-27.
The conclave was held coinciding with HMA’s golden jubilee celebration. HMA President Chandrasekhar highlighted the event’s significance, stating that HMA has been a pillar of leadership and management excellence for 50 years.
During the panel discussion, Mohan Reddy discussed the evolution of AI and technology and why it is now a major focus. He mentioned that the first PhD in AI- speech recognition was completed by Indian researcher Dr Raj Reddy at Stanford University in 1961. At that time, there were no mobile phones or text messages. He said that while discussing autonomous vehicles with Dr Raj Reddy, they realised that making a car autonomous would require a 15-tonne truck to carry the necessary equipment.
Mohan Reddy noted, Fast forward 30 plus years, that 15-tonne equipment has shrunk to just 1.5 kg. Mohan emphasized that this transformation is due to the convergence of various technologies, which has been crucial for AI development.
Comparing past and present, he said the shift is like day and night. From GPUs, CPUs, and TPUs to quantum computing, technology has advanced rapidly. Storage has also evolved from 80KB and 206KB floppy disks to unlimited cloud storage, stating that I do not even know how much of storage we are using in this point of time.
He highlighted the role of sensors, which have become smaller, cheaper, and faster, even recognizing gender. All this data fuels AI, making it more powerful.
