Haritha Haram saplings cry for protection in district

Must read

The Government officials have been failing to carefully nurse the saplings planted under Haritha Haram.
Barring the avenue plantation, nowhere else the survival of the saplings is not noticed anywhere in the mandal.
During the last eight phases of Haritha Haram, at least 2.46 crore saplings were planted in 21,308 areas through the DRDA alone.  The government spends Rs 550 to Rs 600 on each plant.
The government incurred an expenditure of Rs 1,357 crore during the past eight phases of the greenery development programme in undivided Karimnagar district.
The target to plant saplings during 2004-05 is fixed at 36.30 lakh.
In the district, village parks have been developed in 421 acres in 417 villages, including 380 village panchayats. Similarly, food courts have been set up for the monkeys in 57 regions.
Out of the 95 Bruhat Palle Prakruti Vanams proposed in the district, these parks have been set up in 65 regions.
Last year, 17.99 lakh saplings were planted during the Harita Haram. As part of the Amrut Mahotsav of Indian Independence Day, a total of 3.80 lakh saplings were planted at the rate of 1,000 in each of the 380 village panchayats.
As part of the Meri Mitti-Meri Deshprogramme, gardens have been formed with 75 saplings in each village panchayats in memoryof the soldiers who have laid down their lives for the sake of motherland.  But, criticism is that the survival of the saplings is stated to be zero.
However, the avenue plantation carried out during the greenery development programme is considered a success. For fear of authorities taking action if the saplings planted as part of avenue plantation are not nursed carefully, the village panchayats have been focusing attention on tending these plants. Moreover, the panchayats water the plants with the help of thier own tankers.
