Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, was taken to a New York hospital due to various health issues, including COVID.
According to records from the New York City Correction Department, Weinstein, aged 72, was located at the Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward.
According to publicist Juda Engelmayer, Craig Rothfeld, Weinstein’s authorised representative and prison consultant, stated that Weinstein, who was found guilty of rape in both New York and California, is dealing with diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, fluid on his heart and lungs, and has recently been diagnosed with COVID and double pneumonia.
In February 2020, Manhattan jurors convicted him of rape, but in April, the New York Court of Appeals overturned the verdict, stating Weinstein was not given a fair trial due to the judge allowing testimony from accusers he was not formally charged with assaulting.
Weinstein, who has been admitted to Bellevue Hospital several times, has refuted allegations of misconduct and denied engaging in non-consensual sexual encounters with anyone.
There is a possibility that he might face a new trial for rape charges in Manhattan in September. Weinstein’s legal team expressed their desire to move forward at the earliest opportunity.
Manhattan District Attorney’s Office prosecutors plan to charge Weinstein with more violent sexual assaults, following more women agreeing to testify.
The milestone for the #MeToo movement was Weinstein’s verdict, as women alleged sexual misconduct against numerous men in various industries like entertainment, media and politics. A jury determined that in 2006, Miriam Haley, a former production assistant, was sexually assaulted by the co-founder of the Miramax film studio. In 2013, the same jury found that the co-founder raped Jessica Mann, an aspiring actress. He received a 23-year prison sentence. Weinstein also received a 16-year sentence in a different rape case in California.
