“Human trafficking is the biggest menace in the world and there is need to create awareness about this issue and find solutions to eradicate it,” said Women and Children Welfare Minister D Anasuya Seethakka here on Thursday.
After inaugurating a two-day seminar titled “National Consultation on Emerging Trends in Human Trafficking and Strategies to Combat Them”, hosted by the Women Safety Wing of the Telangana Police Department and International Justice Mission (IJM) at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) on Thursday, Minister Seethakka said women and kids are badly affected by human trafficking.
Strategies to combat human trafficking and the new trends emerging in it will be discussed at the two-day national technical consultation seminar, said the Minister.
Referring to the recent Kolkata rape case, Minister Seethakka said, “A doctor was brutally raped in her workplace. Women should be respected in society as well as in their workplace. We should teach our kids to respect women and if necessary we should include these kinds of chapters at the primary school level.” The Minister lauded Telangana Women Safety Wing DGP Shikha Goel for taking steps to eradicate crimes against women and safeguarding them. “First, we need to eradicate drug menace in the society to control crimes against women. Then only we can form a safe and secured society for the women and children, said the Minister.
In her opening remarks, DGP Shikha Goel emphasised the need to “shine a light in the darkness” and explore strategies that empower collective action against trafficking. She highlighted the importance of stronger legislation, effective law enforcement, grassroots initiatives and survivor support.
Approximately 225 participants from across India, including 15 speakers and moderators, attended the event.
Dr Jitender, Director General of Police and International Justice Mission (IJM) Senior Vice-President Daniel Ajoy Varghese were among those present.
The Minister presented an award to DGP Shikha Goel for her exemplary work in providing safety to women in the State.
