Hyderabad, a city famed for its rich culinary heritage, particularly the iconic Hyderabadi biryani, offers a harmonious blend of ancient traditions and contemporary innovation. This vibrant metropolis is a melting pot of diverse cultures, languages, and cuisines, where old-world charm meets modern progress, reflecting India’s dynamic growth while preserving its historical roots. This week for our special segment of Hyderabond, Rubin Cherian, the General Manager of Novotel Hyderabad Convention Centre and Hyderabad International Convention Centre, offers a unique perspective on how Hyderabad’s fusion of heritage and modernity has not only shaped his professional trajectory but also enriched his personal life in profound ways.
“Hyderabad has been a truly transformative chapter in my professional and personal journey,” Cherian begins. Recalling his first step into the vibrant metropolis, he shares how he took on the challenge of pre-opening the ibis hotel. “It was not just about building a business,” he says. “It was about connecting with the heart of the city itself.” Over the years, Cherian has witnessed Hyderabad’s exponential growth, from its historic lanes surrounding the Charminar to its bustling tech hubs and skyscrapers. For him, Hyderabad is more than a place of work; it is where tradition meets innovation, and every day feels like a new adventure.
Reflecting on his association with Hyderabad, he notes how the city has consistently exceeded his expectations. Initially, he arrived with apprehensions, wondering how he would adapt to a city so different from the cosmopolitan places he had lived in before. However, he was quickly won over by Hyderabad’s unique charm. “Hyderabad has a way of making people feel welcome,” he remarks. “The city encourages you to let go of preconceived notions and dive into its world of possibilities.” What initially seemed like challenges soon became cherished aspects of his experience, from the harmonious blend of modern conveniences and traditional values to the city’s open-heartedness and vibrant cultural fabric. Comparing Hyderabad to his hometown of Nagpur, he highlights the contrasting rhythms of the two cities. “While Nagpur is known for its tranquillity and simplicity, Hyderabad pulses with dynamic energy,” he explains. “Hyderabad is the perfect blend of old and new. It’s a city where centuries-old history walks hand-in-hand with futuristic innovation.” The juxtaposition of bustling tech parks and rich cultural heritage has inspired and challenged him in equal measure, making Hyderabad an integral part of his journey.
When asked about what defines Hyderabad in a single word, his response was immediate: Biryani. He sees it as more than just a dish; it is a symbol of the city’s soul. “Every bite tells the story of Hyderabad’s rich history and its vibrant, diverse culture,” he says. The experience of sharing Biryani, whether in the bustling streets of the Old City or a sophisticated restaurant, reflects Hyderabad’s ability to unite people from all walks of life. “It’s a reflection of Hyderabad itself – a city that celebrates diversity and invites you to savor its heritage while embracing its modern spirit,” he adds.
Among Cherian’s fondest memories in Hyderabad are the challenging days of the pandemic. He recalls the resilience and solidarity displayed by his team and the unwavering support of their guests. “In the midst of fear and chaos, what stood out most was the incredible strength of our team and the empathy of our guests,” he shares. These moments, he says, revealed the true spirit of Hyderabad: strength, compassion, and hope.
Professionally, Hyderabad has been pivotal for him, providing an environment that fosters growth and innovation. As the leader of the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC), he has had the privilege of showcasing Hyderabad’s strengths as a global business destination. “HICC plays a vital role in representing Hyderabad and India on global platforms,” he says. The opportunities to connect with global leaders and foster international collaborations have been among the most fulfilling aspects of his career. Despite the city’s many virtues, he admits that the intense summer heat can be a challenge. However, he is quick to add that Hyderabad always finds ways to offer comfort, whether it’s through a cool evening breeze or a refreshing Irani chai. “That’s Hyderabad,” he says with a smile. “A city that never fails to charm, even in the heat.”
For Cherian, Hyderabad is not just a city; it is home. “Hyderabad has a way of welcoming you and making you feel like part of its story,” he reflects. It has shaped his professional and personal growth, offering a blend of history, progress, and warmth that continues to inspire him every day. “Hyderabad is where I’ve learned, evolved, and found a sense of belonging. It is not just where I live; it is where I’ve truly come to call home,” he concludes.
