With the release of Karmma Calling, starring Raveena Tandon, Namrata Sheth entered the Kothari universe. The online series, which was directed by Ruchi Narain and starred Varun Sood and Viraf Patel, debuted on January 26.
The Pioneer caught up with the actress for an exclusive interview!
Speaking candidly about her feelings upon learning she had been cast, the actress exclaimed, “Although I don’t identify with the character at all, because she comes from a background of pain and brokenness. After a few workshops, I took the initiative because my director asked me to, even though I couldn’t relate to it naturally.”
She continued to gush about the television show Karmma Calling. “Playing a character that is very unlike ourselves in real life becomes incredibly enjoyable for us as actors. The director was involved in so many aspects of things. It became challenging for me to bridge the gap between my internal feelings and the desired product as directed by the director at times. There’s so much rage and so much nastiness. But we managed to strike a compromise.”
The young actress goes on to say, “I wasn’t playing a bad part; the phrase is used so broadly. For this part, I had to translate a lot of fury, but that doesn’t make me the show’s antagonist. I might be cunning, calculative, or mysterious, but I wouldn’t be a negative actress in the series. For me, the situations in the series were never clear-cut.”
The Guilty Minds fame also revealed, “I said “yes” to the series as soon as I found out that Raveena Tondon was acting in it. I also happen to be a huge admirer of the original series. I recall watching the original in one sitting while I was in school. But the main reason I signed up for Karmma Calling was that I already knew the story from my childhood, so Raveena Tondon’s involvement was secondary to me. Having Raveena as a co-star was a great advantage.”
“There are no box office demands when working for OTT platforms. If not lavish films, there is a terrific opportunity for any actor to launch their career on OTT today. But having Raveena Tondon around made me feel incredibly content. Even though she is an actress from the past, she still trains for these extended hours. She was devoid of any sense of superiority! The art designer did an amazing job of establishing real-time locations, and a few sequences in the Alibaug area were shot there. For our shoot, the production designer located an incredibly elegant bungalow. I was enthralled!” added the actress.
