The Telangana government is now extending the Indiramma housing scheme to urban areas, with a focus on constructing G+3 buildings in slums, so that the urban poor do not get displaced from their communities.

Announcing this after a review meeting on Friday, the Minister for Revenue, Housing, and I&PR, Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy said the government’s approach is shaped by feedback from the ground.

The Indiramma housing scheme, which has already gained traction in rural areas, is now being tailored to urban realities.

“Poor families living in slums do not want to relocate far from their livelihoods. Earlier, the government built 42,000 houses on the outskirts of Hyderabad, but only around 19,000 moved in. Today, only 13,000 houses are occupied,” Ponguleti said.

Taking these factors into account, the government has decided to construct Indiramma houses right where the poor live – in the slum areas – using a G+3 model. In the first phase, 16 slums in Hyderabad have been identified, and similar plans are being developed for Warangal, Nizamabad, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, and Karimnagar.

As part of the scheme’s tribal component, the government has sanctioned 13,266 houses for Chenchu, Kolam, Thoti, and Kondareddy tribes in the four ITDA areas of Bhadrachalam, Utnoor, Eturunagaram, and Mannanur. An additional 8,750 houses have been allotted to 16 ST constituencies, taking the total sanctioned for tribal groups to 22,016.

Ponguleti asked officials to immediately identify the beneficiaries and start construction.

He emphasised the need for continuous monitoring to ensure the timely execution of the housing programme.

“No other state government is spending Rs 5 lakh per unit on houses for the poor. It’s our commitment to ensure every eligible citizen receives an Indiramma house, as promised in our election manifesto,” he asserted.
