Indo-Pacific leaders must prioritise human impact of decisions: MP

Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat has emphasised the need for leaders to prioritise both geopolitical concerns and the human impact of their decisions as power dynamics shift in the Indo-Pacific region. He made these remarks at an international conference on ‘Indo-Pacific in an Era of Changing Power Dynamics: Economic Integration and Security’ held at GITAM campus.
“The Indo-Pacific region is at a crossroads,” Sribharath stated. “While geopolitical tensions may dominate headlines, it is imperative that we do not lose sight of the pressing human needs of our communities. The challenges we face today require a multifaceted approach that prioritises the well-being of all.”
He highlighted complex challenges like poverty, climate change, migration, and social inequality that transcend national borders, stressing the need for global and regional leaders to act with humanity and empathy through diplomacy and cooperation. Sribharath also encouraged the youth to be globally conscious citizens, facing future challenges with awareness and responsibility. “Our young generation must be equipped to handle the complexities of tomorrow with a sense of duty toward humanity.”
JNU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit discussed the geopolitical challenge of the ‘Two Chinas’ issue, emphasising its broad impact on diplomacy, security, and global economic stability. She underscored Taiwan’s vital role in the global technology supply chain and Visakhapatnam’s importance in regional dynamics. Pandit called for a cautious, peaceful approach to maintain Indo-Pacific stability.
GITAM Vice-Chancellor Prof. Y Gowtham Rao raised concerns over debt traps facing third-world countries in dealings with emerging economic powers. He praised India’s rise as a global power, attributing it to peaceful, ethical practices, honesty, and hard work, emphasising the importance of fostering mutually beneficial partnerships while avoiding exploitation.
