In a gruesome incident, a young man hacked a woman to death after she allegedly rejected his marriage proposal, and later attempted suicide by slitting his own throat near the Saibaba temple in the Satrampadu colony of Eluru city on Thursday afternoon.
Police identified the accused as Thottiboina Yesuratnam (23), who had reportedly been harassing the victim, Jakkula Ratna Grace (22), for several months, pressuring her to marry him.
When she refused, he ambushed her near her house and attacked her with a sword, fatally wounding her in the throat.
Following the attack, Yesuratnam tried to kill himself at the scene by slitting his throat. Both the victim and the assailant collapsed in a pool of blood. Grace, who was a lecturer at a private college, had recently been engaged to another man on May 26, according to her family.
She resided in the MRC colony, while Yesuratnam lived in Musunuru village.
The brutal attack, occurring in a densely populated residential area in broad daylight, has sent shockwaves through the community.
The Three Town Police have registered a case and transported Grace’s body to the Government General Hospital (GGH) for a postmortem examination. Yesuratnam, critically injured, was initially admitted to the local GGH and later transferred to the GGH in Vijayawada for advanced treatment.
