The summer rains in the Upper Krishna Basin triggered a heavy flood in the Jurala Reservoir, forcing the authorities to open 12 gates and release around 82,000 cusecs of water downstream, a first in May in the last 18 years, according to local villagers.

Officials, on alert due to the sudden inflow, said the discharge rose sharply during the day. At 6 am, the inflow was 6,900 cusecs, but by noon it had increased to 80,000 cusecs. The water level touched 7.682 TMC by 3 pm against a full reservoir level of 9.657 TMC. By 6 pm, inflows continued at 66,000 cusecs, prompting the release of floodwaters.

Jurala Executive Engineer Zubair Ahmed attributed the surge to heavy rains around the Ujjain Dam in Maharashtra. He warned that water inflows could hit one lakh cusecs by Thursday night.

This rare summer flood has brought back attention to the changing rain patterns and the urgent need for continuous reservoir monitoring, especially during pre-monsoon periods.
