In a move aimed at protecting the rights of workers and challenging corruption in the coal belt, MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha launched Singareni Jagruti, a new platform under the umbrella of the Telangana Jagruti, on Tuesday.
The move is aimed at focusing exclusively on the welfare of SCCL workers in coordination with the TBGKS, the main workers’ union.
Addressing a gathering of representatives from all 11 SCCL areas at her residence, Kavitha said, “The Congress government is conspiring to dismantle SCCL through its corrupt policies. We have launched Singareni Jagruti to protect the institution and the rights of over 40,000 workers.”
She announced the appointment of area coordinators for all divisions and pledged to prioritise education and healthcare for workers and their families.
Kavitha said that despite SRH contributing 10 per cent of IPL tickets to the HCA, the HCA Secretary demanded an additional 10 per cent and later retaliated when the request was denied.
She claimed the current Congress admin has also diverted DMFT funds generated by SCCL to Kodangal and Madhira, the constituencies of the CM and Deputy CM, instead of using them for miners’ welfare.
Demanding CBSE syllabus in SCCL-run schools and free corporate healthcare for workers’ families, Kavitha called for immediate improvement in housing and basic amenities in mining colonies.
“Quarters built in the 1970s are on the verge of collapse. The government must construct new houses for workers,” she said.
She also criticised the outsourcing of SDL vehicles in opencast mines, calling it a conspiracy to displace SCCL workers.
“These machines must be operated by our workers, not private contractors,” she said, demanding that all private involvement in core operations be ended immediately.
